ATHERTON, Jane (Giblin), of Scituate, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2015, at the age of 96.

Originally from Boston, Jane was a dedicated reporter for many years at the Quincy Patriot Ledger, a loyal docent of the Scituate Mossing Museum, a longtime volunteer for the Scituate Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, and the Etrusco Association, and among the first to host a child through The Metco Program (a state-funded grant program that continues to promote diversity and educational opportunity for thousands of Boston and Springfield school students). She had a passion for politics, music, books, history, storytelling, and writing. In fact, during her lifetime she authored numerous articles for newspapers and periodicals, and she recently published a historical novel, Celia and the Captain, which vividly recounts the story of her grandmother's immigration from Ireland to America.

Equally passionate about her family, she was the devoted wife of the late Melvin A. Atherton and loving mother of Melvin Atherton, Jr. of Bass Harbor, ME, Paula Gnibus of New Ipswich, NH, Janet Atherton of Brewster and Constance Marcotte of Scituate. In addition, she was the warmhearted grandmother of Kimberly Calistro of Temple, NH, Kate Johnson of Greensboro, NC, Jason Gnibus of Jaffrey, NH, Leigh Stuart of New York, NY, Sarah Norwood of Bar Harbor, ME, and Christopher and Shannon Marcotte of Scituate. Jane is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

Friends and Family are invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday, April 4th at 9:30 AM and a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. The burial will take place in Trinity Park Cemetery, Scituate.
